Ever since I
read ‘Aadujeevitham’ of blessed Malayalam writer Benyamin (thanks to Bivin for
suggesting the book), I thought of reading his other books too. The intensity
of the story and the central character Najeeb gifted me a lot of turbulent,
sleepless nights. The pain I endured
reading the first book forced me to ‘order’
(There is no more ‘purchasing’ of
book after the advent of Flipkart, Infibeam and Indulekha biz.) a copy of his “Manjhaveyil
Maranangal” a fantastic suspense thriller with few light moments of comedy
(Like coconut between steam cake(puttu)).
The novel takes
you to the wonderful island of Diego Garcia in Indian Ocean, where the central
character Christy Anthrapper lives. The story is all about his suspenseful
autobiography written in 5 or 6 chapters. Christy sends each chapter to
different people associated with him where a clue in one chapter leads to the
person to whom he has given the following chapter. He wants his story to be
told and send the first chapter to Benyamin, who himself is the character in
the story. The story is narrated in multiple layers where the reader is often
left in a limbo trying to separate truth from fiction. Benyamin tries to trace
the various chapters from different people following various leads. The Island
life in Diego Garcia is beautifully interwoven with the history of declining Anthrapper
family; once the rulers of the island. Even though, similar biographical novels
generally lag in-between and leave the reader to boredom, Benyamin keeps the
pace and suspense till the end; which takes him to a league of his own. Story
starts when Benyamin receives the first part of an autobiography requesting him
to make it a novel.
Autobiography
of Christy Anthrapper begins with his accidental meeting with Jesintha, one of
his classmates, after years. Even though they lived within a few kilometer
radius of the island, they never met after schooldays. An unexpected shooting
happens in front of them; where Senthil, another classmate of Christy was shot.
The story grows through the various ways in which Christy travel, as he tries
to find the killer of Senthil. Mean while Christy falls in love with Melvin, a
malayali nurse in the island hospital. The mystery deepens when Melvin dies in
another accident. The story develops through the following questions,
1. Why
was Senthil killed? Who is responsible for that?
2. Who
was behind the murder of Melvin? Or, was it a normal accident?
3. What
happened to Christy Anthrapper?
4. Will
these questions be answers at the end of the book?
The events of
the novel are interwoven with the history of 16th century Kerala,
particularly Cochin, Udhayamperur and contemporary Pondicherry. (Of course the
references to the Pondicherry had a special influence on me, since most of the
details were given accurately like Kottakuppan Juma Masjid, Pin Code of
Kottakuppam etc.,) The unorthodox climax and the multilayer characterization
give glowing attestation to the mettle and range of Benyamin. I am sure that
you will read this in one sit, a worth reading Malayalam book from an NRI
author.

മഞ്ഞവെയില്‍ മരണങ്ങള്‍ വായിക്കാന്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം ഏതൊരാളിനെയുംപോലെ ഞാനും ആദ്യം ചെയ്തത് 'Diego Garcia' എന്ന് ഗൂഗിളില്‍ search ചെയ്യുകയാണ്. അതിനു ശേഷം ഏതാണ് യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യം ഏതാണ് സാങ്കല്പികം എന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയാനാവാത്ത വിധം നോവലിനെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു തുടങ്ങി… എങ്കിലും 351 പേജുള്ള ഈ നോവലില്‍ 349 പേജിലും റിയാലിറ്റിയേയും ഫിക്ഷനേയും തിരിച്ചറിയാനാവാത്ത വിധം മിക്സ്‌ ചെയ്തുവെങ്കിലും അവസാന രണ്ടു പേജില്‍ ആ സുഖം നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയെന്നു എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നു. (ഒരു പക്ഷെ എന്റെ മാത്രം തോന്നലായിരിക്കാം).
ഇനി മുകളില്‍ ഉന്നയിച്ച ചില സംശയങ്ങളിലേക്ക് അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ചോദ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കു വരാം….
എന്റെ നിഗമനങ്ങള്‍ ഇവയാണ്…
1. സെന്തിലിനെ കൊന്നത് തീര്‍ച്ചയായും മാത്യു അന്ത്രപ്പേര്‍ അല്ല. ജെസ്സിന്തയുടെ വാക്കുകള്‍ പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും വിശ്വസിക്കാം. കാരണം അവള്‍ ഏതു തരക്കാരിയാണെങ്കിലും കഥയില്‍ ഒരിടത്തും അവള്‍ കള്ളം പറയുന്നില്ല (മറിച്ച് ചില സന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളില്‍ അവള്‍ സത്യം ഒളിച്ചുവെക്കുന്നു!!). ഇവിടെ അവള്‍ വ്യക്തമായി പറയുന്നു ഈ മരണത്തിനു മാത്യു അന്ത്രപ്പേരുമായി ബന്ധമില്ല എന്നു. മാത്രമല്ല ബെന്യാമിന്‍ ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ വെച്ച് കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്ന ഷണ്മുഖം പറയുന്നുണ്ട് ഉതിയന്‍ ചേരല്‍ തമിഴ് കഴകം ഒരു തീവ്രവാദി സംഘടനയാണെന്ന്. അരവിന്ദിന്റെ facebook കമന്റില്‍ പറയുന്നു അശ്ലീല ചിത്രങ്ങളും സൈറ്റുകളും മറ്റും തീവ്രവാദ സംഘടനകള്‍ ഫലപ്രദമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാരുന്ടെന്നു. പോണ്ടിച്ചേരിയില്‍ ബെന്യാമിന്‍ കണ്ടെത്തുന്ന ആള്‍ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട് സെന്തില്‍ മേല്പറഞ്ഞ സംഘടനയുടെ ആവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കാണ് വന്നിരുന്നതെന്ന്. തന്നെയുമല്ല സെന്തിലിന്റെ USB യില്‍ ഉള്ള 'തരംതാണ അശ്ലീല ഗോസ്സിപ്പുകളില്‍' എല്ലാം തന്നെ ചെന്നൈയിലെ Hotel പാര്‍ക്ക്‌ പ്ലാസയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പരാമര്‍ശങ്ങളുണ്ട്. തീര്‍ച്ചയായും അത് എന്തെങ്കിലും തീവ്രവാദ സന്ദേശങ്ങള്‍ ആയിരുന്നിരിക്കാം. ആ സംഘടനയിലെ ചില പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍, ഉരസലുകള്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ വാക്ക് തര്‍ക്കങ്ങള്‍ ഇവയാകാം ഒരുപക്ഷെ സെന്തിലിനെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ ആ വാടക കൊലയാളിയെ നിയോഗിക്കാന്‍ ഇടയാക്കിയത്. ആ കൊലയാളി ആകട്ടെ മാത്യു അന്ത്രപ്പെരിന്റെ സംഘത്തിലുള്ളവനും. അങ്ങനെ അയാള്‍ സ്റ്റീഫന്‍ അന്ത്രപ്പേര്‍ വഴിയും മല്ലികാരത്നം വഴിയും കേസ് ഒതുക്കുന്നു…. എന്റെ മനസ്സ് പറയുന്നു ആ കൊലയാളി തീര്‍ച്ചയായും സെയ്ഫു തന്നെയാണ് എന്ന്. (പഴയ ക്ലാസ്സ്‌ ഫോട്ടോയില്‍ ബിലാലിന്റെ വലത്ത് വശത്ത് നിന്നിരുന്ന അതേ സെയ്ഫു!!! ). അന്പ് പറയുന്നുണ്ട് അവളുടെ ഫോണിലെ വീഡിയോയില്‍ ഉള്ളത് സെന്തിലിന്റെ സുഹൃത്താണെന്ന്..
മാത്യു അന്ത്രപ്പേര്‍ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നത് കള്ളക്കടത്തിനോ കൊലപതകത്തിനോ അല്ല.. രാജ്യ ദ്രോഹ കുറ്റത്തിനാണ്… മല്ലികാരത്നം സസ്പെന്ഡ് ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നത് സെന്തിലിന്റെ കേസ് ഒതുക്കിയതിനും… ഒരുപക്ഷെ സെന്തിലിന്റെ കേസിലും അന്ത്രപ്പെരിനെ കുടുക്കിയാല്‍ അത് തന്നെയും ബാധിക്കും എന്ന ചിന്ത മൂലമാകാം സ്റ്റീഫന്‍ അന്ത്രപ്പേര്‍ ആ കേസില്‍ അന്ത്രപ്പെരിനെ ഒഴിവാക്കിയത്. മാത്രമല്ല അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യാന്‍ മാത്രം സ്ട്രോങ്ങ്‌ ആയ മറ്റു കാരണങ്ങള്‍ വേറെയുമുണ്ടുതാനും …
2. Dr. ഇക്ബാലും മേല്‍വിനും ഒരേ ആശുപത്രിയിലാണ് ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്നത്. Dr. ഇക്ബാല്‍ ആകട്ടെ മാത്യു അന്ത്രപ്പെരിന്റെ വിശ്വസ്തനും... ഒരുപക്ഷെ സെന്തിലിന്റെ മരണത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള മേല്‍വിന്റെ (ഇക്ബാലിനോടുള്ള) ചില ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ സംശയങ്ങള്‍ ആകാം അവളുടെ കൊലപതകത്തിലേക്കു നയിച്ചത്. ഒരുപക്ഷെ അതും ചെയ്തത് സെയ്ഫു തന്നെ ആകുമോ?? [Diego യില്‍ പോയ സലിം അകാരണമായി സെയ്ഫുവിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പലവട്ടം പരാമര്‍ശിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.]
3. ക്രിസ്റ്റി അന്ത്രപ്പേര്‍ ജീവനോടെ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അവന്‍ തീര്‍ച്ചയായും ലിസ്ബണില്‍ (Portugal) ഉണ്ട് എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കാനാണെനിക്കിഷ്ട്ടം. പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ മറ്റൊരു ദേശത്തിലേക്കുള്ള മറ്റൊരു യാത്ര!!!!.
ഈ നിഗമനങ്ങൾക്ക് നല്ലൊരു സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്....
